Availability Models forWavelength Channel Protection in WDM Ring Networks
Abstract
Modelling and availability for the ring networks based on WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology with wavelength channel protection mechanism was analyzed. The basic availability concepts are introduced, with particular focus on parallel ring network structure. An analysis of different active and passive nodes and their availability is carried out. The availability for optical link, especially the Span Protection and Route Diversity, is analysed. The wavelength channel protection principles being used in WDM ring networks are explicated: OCh dedicated and OCh shared protection. The availability models for a WDM ring using these types of protection and the impact of availability for nodes and optical links on the entire ring availability is given. Intensity of failures and mean time to repair values are taken from literature. We assumed WDM system with 16 and 64 wavelengths and 2.5 Gb/s as the basic capacity being carried by the wavelength channel was used.
