Abstract

The aim of this paper is to design a speed controller of a DC motor by selection of a PI parameters using genetic algorithm and also to compare it with a fuzzy logic controller. The conventional PI controller has some disadvantage such as adjusting the gains, sensitivity to the controller gains and load disturbances. In order to overcome the disadvantages of the conventional PI controller, a genetic PI speed controller and a fuzzy controller for the drive system are applied to the speed loop of the DC motor and compared to each other. In the control circuits, the current control loop is also used in addition to the speed controller. Thus, the motor current is forced to stay within the hysteresis band determined by the upper and lower hysteresis limits. Simulations are realized and analyzed by the two different control strategies. It is observed that the genetic PI controller slightly enhances the performance and dynamics of the DC motor in comparison to a well-tuned fuzzy controller. The genetic PI controller is also less sensitive to the parameter variations and disturbances than the fuzzy controller.
